The Climate Mission exists to identify consequential climate and ecological work, understand what is preventing it from moving, and bring the missing combination of access, capital, capability, credibility, partnership and persistence around it.

The mission is not to own the answer. It is to make sure credible pieces of the answer do not remain stranded.

We will help serious work become visible, supported, connected and deployable. We will measure what changed. We will stop when the evidence, rights or integrity fail.

Credible work with evidence or technical maturity that cannot reach deployment, adoption or scale because a specific barrier remains unresolved.

Emerging, unconventional, young, place based or under recognised work that needs evidence, development and protection before it can responsibly move into the main pathway.

The world is not short of people trying. It is short of reliable routes from potential to action.

The research does not say there is one missing climate invention. It says meaningful work repeatedly slows at the joins between evidence, authority, finance, implementation, rights and access.

Work is visible, but action is fragmented

Methane can be detected and still remain unresolved. Clean energy projects can be ready and still sit behind grid, demand or finance barriers. Local stewards can protect living systems and still lack direct access to capital and decision rooms.

The missing input is often not more money

Some work needs capital. Other work needs a buyer, a regulator, an engineer, a legal pathway, a trusted introduction, a clearer proposition, a stronger organisation, or somebody who keeps the room moving after the first meeting.

Three portfolios, not three gadgets.

Two independent research passes converged on the same underlying structure. These are the mission's first fields of view, not permanent brand pillars and not a claim that every answer sits inside them.

Reduce near term warming pressure quickly.

Methane, HFCs and selected super pollutants offer some of the fastest available climate benefits. The opportunity is often less about inventing a new technology and more about connecting detection, responsibility, repair, finance and verification.

Why these three

The research logic, independent convergence and the reason familiar alternatives sit elsewhere.

Why these three rose above the field.

The ranking did not ask which topics are fashionable, easiest to fund, or closest to Western Australia. It asked where planetary consequence and acceleration opportunity overlap. The three portfolios survived two independent mission-first analyses, then remained coherent when tested against the operating architecture.

Planetary consequence

How much benefit is possible, how quickly it can begin, how durable it may be, and whether the causal mechanism is supported by credible evidence.

Acceleration elasticity

How much faster or further the work could move when the missing input is access, coordination, finance design, legitimacy, operating support or barrier removal.

Integrity and rights

Whether action can proceed without unacceptable harm, false claims, fossil lock-in, maladaptation, extractive governance, or bypassing Indigenous and local decision rights.

The key convergence: methane and rapid warming reduction provide the fastest near-term lever; clean power to industry changes the structural emissions system; rights-led living systems and resilience protect the people, places and ecological functions that must endure. Together they cover speed, structural transition and planetary continuity without forcing one arbitrary technology into each category.

Not ignored. Put in the right place.

The three portfolios are containers for action, not a declaration that every other climate field is unimportant. Several familiar candidates are inside the portfolios, held as frontiers, or deliberately kept out of deployment until the evidence and governance mature.

Durable carbon removalCultivate frontier

It will likely be needed for residual emissions and future drawdown, but novel removal is still tiny relative to projected need and carries major measurement, energy, land, material and policy-demand uncertainties. Mineralisation, biochar and other high-integrity pathways stay active in a bounded frontier lane.

Nuclear and geothermalInside Portfolio 02

Clean firm power is not excluded. These technologies are assessed where a real grid needs them, under place-specific safety, cost, timing and governance conditions. The portfolio does not pick a favourite generator before understanding the system.

HydrogenConditional input

Hydrogen matters where direct electrification is not practical, including parts of steel, chemicals and shipping. It is not a planetary outcome by itself. Projects must prove clean supply, appropriate use, credible demand, infrastructure and lifecycle benefit.

EVs, buildings and efficiencyEmbedded, not separate

These are important and often mature. They sit inside clean power and resilience where a specific bottleneck is highly additional. The mission should not duplicate established markets unless it can name the unresolved interface it will change.

Food systemsAcross all three

Agrifood systems account for roughly one-third of anthropogenic emissions. Methane, clean energy, cold chains, food loss, land use, water and farmer resilience cut across the portfolios. A separate food category would duplicate them unless a coherent high-elasticity pathway emerges.

OceansProtect now, engineer cautiously

Mangroves, coasts and marine livelihoods sit inside living systems and resilience. Engineered ocean carbon removal remains a research and governance field until measurement, permanence, ecological effects and transboundary authority become decision-grade.

Tree plantingReframed

Generic planting is not a portfolio. Intact-system protection, natural regeneration and ecologically appropriate restoration can qualify when tenure, hydrology, biodiversity, maintenance and local benefit are real. A hectare count is not proof of recovery.

Solar radiation modificationWatch and govern only

Potential speed does not override unresolved transboundary, distributional, termination and legitimacy risks. This belongs in research and international governance, not in the mission's active acceleration portfolio.

Rapid Warming Reduction

Methane, HFCs and selected super pollutants matter because cutting them can reduce the rate of warming on a much faster timetable than many long-lived infrastructure transitions. The strongest opportunity is not another monitoring dashboard. It is the missing response chain between detection, responsibility, repair, finance and verified closure.

What the research found

  • Leak detection and repair, equipment replacement, vapour recovery, mine methane capture and other methods are already available.
  • UNEP's MARS system has moved global monitoring forward, issuing thousands of alerts across dozens of countries.
  • The persistent gap is conversion: many alerts do not become a named action, verified repair and durable operating response.
  • Waste, wastewater, refrigerants, cooling and agricultural methane create additional routes beyond fossil operations.

Why this mission could matter

Nicole can bring the operator, regulator, financier and technical authority into one accountable sequence. Scarlet can turn a plume, landfill, cooling system or agricultural problem into a decision-ready intervention with evidence, ownership, support needs and a visible finish line. The value is completion, not attention.

Clean Power to Industry

This portfolio connects generation, grids, storage, flexibility, industrial heat, low-emission materials, standards, procurement and offtake. It rose above a narrower "green technology" category because the decisive failures usually occur between technologies, institutions and markets rather than inside one device.

What the research found

  • Clean generation and storage are already scaling, but network access, congestion, connection rules and transmission remain critical constraints.
  • Industrial decarbonisation projects can be technically credible while still failing on affordable power, shared infrastructure, standards, buyer demand and first-commercial finance.
  • Green iron, low-emission steel and cement belong here as system transitions, not isolated flagship technologies.
  • Community and Indigenous ownership, benefit-sharing and legitimate place governance can determine whether infrastructure is durable and deployable.

Why this mission could matter

The mission can work at the interfaces where individual developers have too little authority to solve the whole problem. It can aggregate buyers, prepare offtake, expose the one rule or risk allocation that blocks several projects, assemble shared infrastructure cases and keep communities and rights holders inside the decision from the start.

Rights-Led Living Systems and Resilience

This portfolio protects forests, peatlands, mangroves, watersheds, food and land systems, and people exposed to heat, water stress, coastal risk and disasters. It is not a vague nature category. Every initiative needs a clear climate or resilience mechanism, measurable outcomes, legitimate local authority and rights-compatible governance.

What the research found

  • Adaptation is already a present-tense need, while operating capability and long-term maintenance remain badly underfunded.
  • Indigenous and community land rights can be causal infrastructure. Studies in the Amazon have linked secure collective tenure with lower forest loss.
  • Heat action, cyclone preparedness, watershed governance and ecologically appropriate coastal restoration can reduce death, loss and exposure.
  • The field also carries serious integrity risks: over-crediting, poorly designed tree planting, maladaptation, extractive intermediaries and projects that bypass local authority.

Why this mission could matter

The people closest to the work often have the weakest access to large funders and global decision rooms. The mission can make locally led work legible without taking ownership, connect multiple outcome budgets, bring rights holders into rooms as principals, and fund the maintenance and institutional continuity that short grants often ignore.

Rights, direct finance, heat plans, water systems, monitoring, maintenance and local delivery capacity move together rather than as isolated projects.

The institution proves that acceleration can strengthen local authority and enduring capability, not merely move capital or promote technology.

The global field is vastly larger. This layer proves the taxonomy, filters, evidence card and navigation model. A dedicated expansion pass can now grow it to hundreds of initiative-level records across all intervention families, geographies and organisational forms without changing the interface.

Research status: this is a representative discovery atlas, not an exhaustive census and not an endorsement list. Initiative-level operating status, claims, rights conditions and data must be reconfirmed before any public association, approach, support or funding decision. What makes this an institution: decisions leave a record, claims have evidence, rights remain decision rights, funders cannot buy a ranking, and nobody receives permanent support simply because the founders love the idea.

Start with one methane related first crossing.

Not because methane is the whole mission. Because it offers the clearest early test of whether the institution can take credible work from known but stuck to visibly moving.

A real source, a real owner, a real barrier.

The strongest first crossing is a methane reduction opportunity where the source or intervention is already credible, responsibility can be named, and the missing link is action rather than scientific invention.

  • The potential climate benefit is meaningful.
  • An accountable decision owner can be identified.
  • The exact barrier is visible and influenceable.
  • Access, rights and governance can be secured legitimately.
  • Before and after change can be measured.
  • A meaningful movement is possible within months.

Not another report. A completed response chain.

  • Translate the evidence into a decision ready case.

This does not make us a methane organisation. It proves whether the acceleration engine can move one consequential piece of climate work. The other two portfolios remain active scouting fields.
